| Dog Breed of the Week: Basenji Posted: 03 Nov 2010 05:12 PM PDT The Basenji is arguably one of the most unique dog breeds out there. The breed is very clean, basically odorless, and grooms itself. The Basenji does not bark, but kind of yodels instead. It is a breed known to be independent, playful and highly skilled as a hunter. No, really - the Basenji is not a cat, but it's probably the closest any canine can come to the feline species. So, if you love cats and want a dog, maybe the Basenji is your type. Or, if you are allergic to dogs, the breed is also a great choice. The Basenji's short and soft hair sheds very little (if at all), leaving less dander in your environment. However, even if you are not a cat lover or allergic, the Basenji still makes a wonderful companion. This is a well-rounded dog: active, affectionate, intelligent and loyal. To me, the Basenji is like the perfect blend of small dog plus big dog with a dash of feline. Unique indeed! If you love Basenjis, share your story with others here. | Missouri Approves Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:56 PM PDT Missouri voters have spoken. On November 2nd, the majority voted to approve Proposition B, also known as the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. It was a close call, though. If you ask me, the final vote counts were frighteningly close: about 48% to 51%. Supporters of Prop B consider this a great victory for dogs in Missouri. The opposition, comprised mainly of those in the field of agriculture, feel that Prop B could threaten their way of life. While I tend to appreciate both sides of most issues, this one was a no-brainer for me. I personally think this is not only a victory for dogs in Missouri, but that it sets a great precedent for the rest of the country. According to a study by the Better Business Bureau, "the southwest section of Missouri is the hub of the puppy industry." The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act states legal guidelines for Missouri dog breeders to maintain humane, small-scale breeding facilities rather than large-scale dog factories (which is basically what puppy mills are). Want to know what Prob B actually says? Read the full text of the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. So, how can you avoid inadvertently purchasing a puppy that originated from a puppy mill? First of all, do not buy a dog from a pet shop. One option is to adopt a puppy from a shelter or rescue group (sometimes they operate in front of a pet supply store, but they are not selling the puppies for a profit). If you want to purchase a purebred puppy, make sure you choose an experienced breeder. I'm sure you've heard it plenty of times before, but no one said it better than Mahatma Gandhi: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." I could not agree more. I'm hoping you feel the same. | November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month Posted: 02 Nov 2010 04:27 PM PDT Now that October's Adopt-a-Dog Month is finished up, it's time to celebrate November's Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month. Personally, I have always had major soft spot for senior pets. Now that all of my own pets are seniors, I have an even greater appreciation for the older pets. Sadly, senior dogs are often passed over for puppies and young adults, but these precious canines deserve to live out their golden years in the comfort of a happy, loving home. Though they require special care and attention, senior dogs can bring such joy into our lives. The extra time spent is well worth it! He might take a little longer going up the stairs, but the love he will bring to your home is beyond compare. If you are thinking about getting a dog, perhaps a senior dog is right for you. What better gift can you give a dog than a forever home? Have you ever adopted a senior dog? Please tell us all about your experience by leaving a comment below.
