The Shih Tzu is a feisty but sweet little lap dog with an assertive personality. Its coat is typically long and luxurious, but can also be trimmed short. The Shih Tzu is of Asian descent, where it was once known to be a household pet to the Ming Dynasty. This noble history probably contributes to its bold, confident attitude. The breed is sometimes called the "chrysanthemum dog" because of the hair growth pattern on its face.

I think Shih Tzus look like adorable little gremlins - maybe that's why one of the most common names for them is Gizmo! Are you a Shih Tzu enthusiast? Tell us why you love the breed.

Possession Aggression in Dogs

Does your dog growl or show other signs of aggression towards people or other dogs when he is playing with toys, treats or other valued items? If so, you might be dealing with possession aggression. Some dogs are especially protective of what they "own". They may snarl, growl or even bite to safeguard their possessions. Sometimes called resource guarding or food aggression, possession aggression can easily lead to a dangerous situation. Some dogs will merely threaten, but others may act upon their threats.

Is possession aggression a problem for your dog? The time to act is now, before someone gets hurt. Learn more from dog trainer Amy Bender as she discusses how to identify and manage this behavior issue in dogs.
