The massive Cane Corso can be pretty intimidating at first glance, and for good reason. This is not your typical big goofy tail-wagger. Rather, the Cane Corso is a muscular, athletic and powerful working dog. He is fearless, noble and vigilant. This is one serious dog. All of that being said, the Cane Corso can make an excellent companion for the right household. He is not necessarily the most affectionate of dogs, but he is loyal. The Cane Corso will form a close bond with the members of his family and act as a guardian and protector. In fact, that is how the breed was named: "Corso" was derived from the Latin cohors, which means "guardian" and "protector." Cane is the Italian word for dog (derived from the Latin canis).

The Cane Corso became a new official AKC working group breed in 2010. The breed, along with six other new dog breeds, will make its Westminster Dog Show debut this February.

The Cane Corso is an amazing dog, but it is definitely not right for everyone. The breed may be territorial and often has an aversion to strangers. Training and socialization are absolutely essential for Cane Corsos, and they thrive with a clearly defined "job" to do. If you are interested in this breed, learn about the Cane Corso. Snowed In!

Labrador Retriever Pictures - Photo of Labrador Retriever Duke in the Snow

Here in the Southeast, we've been snowed in for two (going on three) days. The Southern states are simply not equipped for 3-5+ inches of snow that has been turning to serious ice. Most roads are impassable and nearly everything is shut down. Tonight, up to a foot or more of show is headed for the Northeast. The Pacific Northwest is also expecting plenty of rain with some snow. Almost everywhere in North America is seriously cold right now. Just about the only areas to escape the bitter cold are the Southwest, Southern Texas and much of Florida. Basically, most of us are currently facing cabin fever (or will start to soon). That means our dogs are probably starting to feel antsy too.

Over the last two days, I've managed to take a few careful walks around the block with my dog. She has always loved the snow, but her aging joints make it harder to maneuver on the slick ice and crispy frozen snow. Most of the time, we are simply stuck in the house. It's got me thinking of some ways to pass the time and keep my dog entertained. If you're looking for some ideas, here's my list of indoor activities for dogs. When the time comes to settle down and relax, give your dog a treat dispensing dog toy and curl up with a good book or movie. If you are looking for a dog-related movie, see if you can get any of the following favorite flicks on-demand or find them in your own movie collection:

If you decide to go out and play in the snow with your dog, have fun and don't forget to play it safe! What's your favorite way to keep yourself and your dog busy when the weather is bad?

About the Photo: This is Duke, our chocolate Lab. He is a gentle giant to be sure; not aggressive and very social. He is eight years old and loves the snow. Freshly fallen snow was one of his life excitements. He thoroughly loved to run and jump in the deepest snow he could find, often above his shoulders! Sometimes he would roll on his back and simply make what I called "snow puppies!" We've moved now, but he definitely misses the "white stuff." He is a very important part of our family and Georgia just doesn't get much snow. Sorry Duke!!!!!!   - Reba

To Duke:
I hope you're enjoying the snow in Georgia right now!
