“Dog Breed of the Week: Scottish Terrier” plus 1 more |
| Dog Breed of the Week: Scottish Terrier Posted: 09 Feb 2011 01:27 PM PST This week's featured breed was chosen in honor of "Sadie" AKA Ch. Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, Best in Show winner at last year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Westminster 2011 is just a few days away, and most likely another dog breed will win the title of Best in Show. For now, let's celebrate the Scottie. The Scottish Terrier, or Scottie, is an active and bold dog with very short legs and a small but sturdy build. The Scottie is strong and fearless, but also makes an affectionate companion. This breed is well known for its distinctive beard and short stature, as well as it's frequent Scottish attire in pictures and cartoons. Scotties have been owned by many well-known public figures over the years, including Queen Victoria, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and George W. Bush. Do you love Scotties too? | Countdown to the Westminster Dog Show Posted: 09 Feb 2011 01:20 PM PST Every year, dog breed enthusiasts look forward to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, an event that is considered by many to be one of the world's most prestigious dog shows. When it comes to purebred dogs, the WKC dog show is for the best of the best. Entry into the show is limited to dogs that are registered by the AKC and have obtained AKC Championship. For two days every February, we get to see ideal representations of each dog breed. They are the cream of the crop. In many ways, it's kind of like the Miss America pageant for dogs. The 2011 Westminster dog show is just around the corner. On February 14-15, hundreds of beautiful purebred dogs and their handlers will compete for the top spot: Best in Show. Westminster is a benched show, meaning that each participating dog is required to be at an assigned location during specified hours. If you are attending the show, you will actually have access to these benched areas. I had personally hoped to go this year so I could meet and interview some of the participants, but I just can't make the trip right now. I will be watching from home, though. Fortunately, About.com Veterinary Medicine Guide Dr. Janet Crosby is attending and covering the show. Check out her coverage of the participants so far, and stay tuned for more. Enjoy the show!
