“Dog Breed of the Week: Leonberger” plus 1 more |
| Dog Breed of the Week: Leonberger Posted: 05 Jan 2011 04:24 PM PST The Leonberger is a beautiful, massive working dog with a kind and gentle disposition. The Leo makes its Westminster debut this February, and is also a recent addition to the AKC working group. Though it is not a common breed, the Leo has its own following, and for good reason. This breed is known to bond closely with its family and seems to have a kind of intuition when it comes to human emotions. Because of this, they make excellent family members and also superb therapy dogs. I have only had the pleasure of meeting a few Leos over the years, and each one was remarkable. They are gigantic yet gentle with incredibly soft coats. They cuddly yet active. If you love giant dogs with even bigger hearts, have the room for a 120 to 170 pound dog, and can exercise him daily, then you might have found your match in the Leonberger. Learn more about the Leonberger and decide for yourself. Leo lovers, please share your stories about this wonderful dog breed. | January is Train Your Dog Month Posted: 05 Jan 2011 03:21 AM PST This January marks the second annual National Train Your Dog Month. Presented by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), National Train Your Dog Month aims to raise awareness to the public about the importance of proper dog training and socialization. The APDT chose January because so many people get new dogs or puppies during the winter holidays. This month is the time to get started with a training program for the life of that dog. Training your dog does not have to be a chore. Actually, it can be a lot of fun for both you and your dog. Plus, it helps create and strengthen the bond between the two of you. In honor of National Train Your Dog Month, I have created a step-by-step guide to the essentials of dog training. Whether you are new to dog ownership, or just need a refresher course, everything you need to know is there. Happy training!
